5 Questions to Ask Yourself before a Hair Cut

1. Do I know what I want?

The first thing you need to ask yourself if you even know what you want as far as a hair cut goes. Do you have a picture of the style? Or is it just a celebrity or just an idea in your head?

In most cases, it is best to have a picture of the hairstyle that you are looking for. You also should do some research and learn how to describe the hairstyle that you’re looking for. You should know how to describe things like long layers, blunt cut, asymmetrical, face-framing, etc.

2. Do I have a stylist who will know exactly how to do what I want?

Never get a cut by a stylist who you do not know - even if the person has been recommended to you. Instead of getting a haircut the very first time that you visit the stylist, just get a simple basic wash and dry. During the time that you spend with the stylist, you’ll get a chance to learn the stylist’s techniques and skill-level. You should also take this time to talk to the stylist about hair styles that would suit you.

3. Is this a spur of the moment decision or one I have thought about?

How long have you been thinking about getting your hair cut? Did you just wake up today and decide that after work, you’re going to get your hair cut? Or have you been thinking about it for a while now?

In most situations, it is not a good idea to get your hair cut on the spur of the moment. You can make so many mistakes doing this. First, you probably don’t have a real idea of what you want. Usually when that happens, you end up in a stylist’s chair telling them to do whatever they want. Sometimes this works out well but many times it does not.

Secondly, don’t think that drastically changing your hair style is going to change who you are. Sometimes we change our hair to signify that we have moved on from something. Just remember that whatever you’re going through is not going to magically disappear just because you changed your hair.

4. Is this hair style going to look right on me?

Have you determined your own face shape? Can you identify a celebrity with the same face shape as yours? Being able to do this will help you to determine a hair style that will look right with your face shape.

Just because that cut super short bob looks awesome on Betty does not mean it is going to look awesome on you. You can also look online and find programs that will allow you to upload your picture and try on various hair styles and various hair colors. Don’t depend on these completely but they should give you a pretty accurate idea of what will work. Try to upload a quality picture to get the best outcome.

5. Will I know how to care for this style at home?

Sure, that hair style looks awesome and will probably look awesome on you. But have you thought about maintenance? Is this a hair style that will grow out quickly making you need to see a stylist once a month to keep it fresh? Do you know how to style your hair in the same fashion once it has been washed?

It is always a good idea to ask the stylist how to do your hair at home. Also, keep a close watch on the stylist and even take a few notes on what types of styling products are used along with methods and order of application. This will help you to more closely get the same style when you try it out on your own.

If it’s a complicated hair style that only a Hollywood start would be able to keep up, then you may just want to save that style for a special occasion and buy a wig instead! Get a hairstyle that you can accomplish on your hair and still have a “fresh from the salon” look!

Our hair is our crowning glory so how we wear it is an important part of our overall style! Make sure that your hair style is one that is becoming to you!
