African American Hair Care Tips
African American hair care tips are not only for black women but for
any woman of color who has curly or kinky texture of hair whether natural or relaxed. Some or all of these hair tips may apply to you. I hope that at least one will be something that you need to help you in your journey for long, healthy hair.
- Use a cream moisturizer applied lightly to your hairline and nape, brush gently, put on your scarf for 15-30 minutes for ultra smooth edges.
-
Don't wear your ponytails too tight. This could cause thinning of your
hairline. You don't need a super tight ponytail in order to look
decent. If you smooth your edges, super tight isn't necessary.
- Always wear a satin scarf overnight to hold
your hairstyle and keep your hairline smooth for morning.
- Never go to bed without detangling your hair with a wide-toothed comb. The tossing and turning during sleeping will just lead to more tangles to deal with in the morning.
-
Use a non-water-based moisturizer on your ends every single
night
before rolling or pinning it up. This will keep your ends from getting
dry which causes split ends and help the curls to hold. Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey works well for this.
- Get
your ends trimmed regularly - every 6-8 weeks depending on the
condition of your hair. Out of all of my African American hair care
tips, this is one that you should not ignore and should begin doing
immediately!
- Wear your hair up more than you wear it down. If you don't like wearing your hair up during the day, put it up when you come home.
Don't use brown protein gel on
your hair. The protein will make your hair hard and the brown will discolor your scalp if you are of a lighter skin toneThere are a TON of clear, moisturizing gels on the market
today of all kinds of consistencies. My favorites are Organic Root Stimulator Lock & Twist Gel and Fantasia Frizz Buster Straightening Gel. A great tip
is to mix your gel
in your hands with a bit of a moisturizer to keep it from becoming hard.
- A very important black hair tip is to try to deep condition
your hair under a hooded dryer whenever you can. This helps the
conditioner penetrate to further condition.
- Be careful
of who you let do your hair. If you feel that your stylist is not
caring for your hair, then you need to find someone else. Don't feel
guilty for finding a new hair stylist!
- Wash your hair
at least once a week. Many black women have been told that we shouldn't
wash our hair too often because it may dry it out. That's a myth.
Washing your hair keeps it clean and promotes an environment for hair
growth.
- Never, EVER, use a heat styling tool on hair
that is not freshly washed. No touch-ups with the curling iron or flat
iron mid-week. This is probably the most important of all black hair
tips!
- Have a week where you don't heat style your hair
at all. Style it in a bun or French roll or try braid outs and twist
outs. Using these styles often will lead to retainment of more hair
length!
- If you're really looking for long hair, you may
have to let go of the idea of having the latest hair style and go for a
classic style instead. Long hair is always in style. You can do layers,
u-shape, v-shape, and bangs with long hair. Here's an article on trimming your own hair. My advice is to keep it
simple while you're trying to reach your growth goal.
