BC Nightmare

by Davacenia Adams
(Nashville, Tn)

In the spring of 2007, I decided to go natural and get my hair braided with extensions while I was waiting for it to grow. I was new in town and had a really hard time finding a braider who could schedule me around my busy schedule. Weeks went by and I finally found someone who gave me the long thick braids I desired.

About a month later, I got up one morning and tied my braids back and went jogging. Afterward, I got in the shower. When I was leaving the shower I noted in the mirror a large hill raise up in my left breast. I touched it and it was hard as a rock!! After biopsy I learned I had a 8cm stage 3 triple negative breast cancer tumor!!!

I kept my beautiful braids for about another month till I woke up one morning to find them all lying on my pillow. Wow.

I am now a 1 1/2 year survivor ( as my cancer journey was unusually long ) with a big thick afro that I am afraid to even look at in the mirror for too long for fear something will happen to it!! LOL!! But I thank God for my miracle of life and that hair grows back!!
