Finally, Beautiful and Healthy Hair is Mine
After college, I remained on a quest to get beautiful and healthy hair.
Since I'd finally gotten my first job, I was able to afford to get my relaxer touch-ups on time from my regular stylist. I was still going to the same Egyptian salon that I had been going to since I was 13 - so almost 10 years.
My hair was long but could have been much healthier. My mom always reminded me not to let them cut too much when I got my ends trimmed so I don't think I ever got them trimmed very well which caused more breakage, un-even ends, and more split ends! My hair stayed the same basic length (bra strap) for a while until I had an epiphany.
One day I decided to go to a luxury salon to have my hair done just to see what it was like. I was only getting a wash and blow dry. The stylist who did my hair commented that I had beautiful hair. I told him that I wished it would grow longer and be healthier. He then said that my hair could grow as long as I wanted it to as long as I took care of it.
A light bulb suddenly went off inside my head.
I thought about what he said all the way home that day. I didn't have a problem with my hair growing. I had a problem with my hair breaking and splitting because I didn't know how to care for long hair! As a result, I always needed my hair trimmed just as much as it had grown. It would never get any longer.
From that day on, I never shied away from a good trim and I began to take better care of my hair by washing more regularly and keeping up with maintenance morning and night. I wanted to have long hair but I also wanted beautiful and healthy hair.
I began seeing a new Egyptian stylist and would get my ends trimmed on schedule along with my relaxer touch-ups - every 2 months. When I first started getting the trims, I'd tell him to trim as much as was needed and he did. My hair seemed to stay the length again for a little while. But sooner than later, I started noticing thick, healthy ends. I had finally figured out the best regimen for caring for long hair and getting it to grow longer.
Even so, I didn't get lax on my regular trims every 8 weeks...whether it needed to be a little or a lot, I got them. I never again wanted anyone to say that I had split ends! Sometimes I would go and my stylist would say that I didn't need a trim. I wouldn't get one that time but I'd always be back in about 4 weeks to get a trim usually because I had spotted one or two at some point and wanted them gone before they caused a problem! I didn't want to risk the splits becoming any worse.
Before I knew it, people were always commenting on my hair. They were noticing how much longer and healthier it was getting. I really didn't notice the length as much as I noticed the health and that was really my main concern. I knew that length would come with health.
Sometimes even strangers would even comment that I had beautiful and healthy hair. I remember once waiting in line at a bank and a woman kept staring at me. I didn't know why until she finally just spoke up and said that my hair was so beautiful and the style fit my face so well. I remember this distinctly because I had no idea that I had long, healthy hair.
Beautiful and healthy hair was finally mine!
During this time, I completely gave up on hair styles. I decided that I was never going to let someone again cut my hair into some hair style that I didn't want. I just went with long straight blunt cut hair. It worked for me then and today too (but I'll get to that soon.) For one, it was so much easier to care for. I didn't have to roll my hair if I didn't want to and I could pay attention to my ends so much better than before. It was just easy and I liked it that way. I was finally happy with my hair.
