Bed Time Care of Black Hair
|
|
Bed time care of black hair is a vital part of any healthy hair regimen. Sleeping is not the time to ruin all of the healthy hair treatment you've given your hair throughout the day. In fact, sleeping is one of the most important times to care for your hair.
Bed time gives you the opportunity to give your hair a break, allow it to be replenished, and to soak up moisture. However, if you simply fall into to bed at night without a single care for your hair, you will have a much harder time caring for your hair that next morning. Additionally, doing this over time can lead to dryness, damage, and breakage.

Here is what you need to do to for proper bed time care:
1. Detangle your hair.
Take your finger and part your hair down the middle. Take your wide tooth comb and gently detangle one side at a time starting at the bottom and working your way up. Pin that section out of the way and do the same for the other half. If your hair is super tangly rub some serum between your palms and then rub over your hair before detangling.
2. Moisturize your ends.
Take your ends moisturizer of choice. I prefer something non-water based to avoid reversion. A great product for this is Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey. I recommend taking small sections of hair (just sectioning the length with your fingers) and applying just a tad of your moisturizer. This way, you can ensure full coverage. But if you are in a rush (which you should never be with your hair), rub the moisturizer in the palms of your hands and then apply to your hair ends.
3. Put your hair up.
There are various ways that you can put your hair up at night:
- Roll - You can add rollers all over for more body the next day.
I'd recommend using satin covered sponge rollers for the most
comfortable sleeping. Magnetic rollers with the plastic cover can be
used also if you are just rolling a portion of your hair.
- Pin Up - Take hair clips and just clip your hair to the top of your hair.
- Wrap - You can do a traditional wrap method of wrapping your hair
all around your head like a roller. Or you can do a cross-wrap where
you part your hair down the middle and pin the ends on the opposite
side.
- Bun - If you choose to wear your hair in a bun overnight, make
sure the bun is very loose so that you don't pull your hair or add
stress to your hairline and nape area.
- Mohawk Roller Method - You can take jumbo sized magnetic rollers and roll your hair down the middle for a very loose curl.
- Ponytail - Put your hair in a high ponytail and either pin the ends down or add a few satin covered sponge rollers to the ends.
The jist of bed time care is to keep it safe at night as well as to prepare it for the next day's style.
4. Protect your hair.
You have three choices in protecting your hair at night - a satin scarf, a satin hair bonnet, or a satin pillow case. You can combine the three but you must use at least one. Always wear a scarf over rollers!
Additionally, I'd say that a satin pillowcase is not enough. However, it's better than nothing! The sole purpose is to keep your hair in place as well as to keep it from drying out.
When you put on your satin scarf, make sure that it is not too tight in the nape area otherwise, it will cause breakage.
Also, if you wear a bonnet, make sure it is a friendly bonnet. The elastic in some bonnets can cause breakage on the hairline or the nape area. Look in Sally's Beauty Supply for various types of satin scarves and wraps.
In conclusion, taking good bed time care of black hair is pretty simple once you get into a routine. It becomes just another part of washing your face or brushing your teeth in preparation for bed. I hope that I have helped you to see the various options you have in bed time care. Good luck!
