Choosing the Best Flat Iron for Hair

Buying the best flat iron for hair is not quite as simple as it seems. Some people say that cheap flat irons work just as well as expensive ones. Some people think you should spend your entire savings on a flat iron.  I tend to think a few more things are involved. You need to know how to evaluate a good flat iron.

Price is a Good Indicator

The best flat iron for hair is the one that works for you.

I do think that you should spend the money to invest in a high quality flat iron.  By that, I mean, you should be spending at least $75 on a flat iron.  A really good flat iron generally runs between $100 and $200.

You want a flat iron that is made of quality ceramic - not one that is just ceramic coated or ceramic plated.  Pay attention to the label when you are researching.  The most recommended and best flat irons on the market today are the Sedu flat iron, Chi flat iron, and a Solia flat iron

I purchased a Sedu flat iron for around $125 and it has proven to be the best flat iron for hair - MY HAIR.  It falls right in the middle of price range and has solid ceramic plates.

Getting a cheaper flat iron like a Revlon flat iron or many of the Conair ones are probably ceramic plated and more than likely just don't get hot enough to truly straighten hair especially if your hair is natural, curly, and/or kinky.  Believe me, I've tried them!  The result is a waste of money.  However, if you are new to flat ironing, you may want to give one of them a try.

While price is a good indicator, it is not the only one.

Temperature Control

Another thing you want to look for in a good flat iron is a temperature control setting.  Everyone does not have the same type of hair or desire the same straightness in their hair.  Having a temperature setting gives you the option of controlling the heat level that you use.  The Sedu flat iron has a wide range of setting to work with all types of hair.

Flat Iron with a Swivel Cord

Having a swivel cord is another plus to a flat iron for hair. A swivel cord will make it a little easier to manipulate the iron as you are using it and keep it from getting tangles as you flat iron all of your hair.

Straightening and Curling

The best flat irons also have the ability to curl hair.  To determine this, typically you want to look at the edge of the plates.  Is it a smooth curved edge or a straight flat edge?  A smooth curved edge will allow you to make curls.

Cool Handle

You'll also want to read some reviews about the flat iron and make sure that the handle does not get too hot while using it.  If it gets hot, you will have difficulty handling the tool and furthermore, it will just be annoying.

Constant Heat

Finally, you want a flat iron that maintains its heat setting.  You don't want to have to wait 2 minutes in between hair sections while the flat iron reheats itself.  One thing I really love about the Sedu flat iron is that it heats up quickly and maintains heat throughout the use of it.

Conclusion

I hope you have enough information to go out and buy the best flat iron for hair whether it's natural, curly, relaxed, or kinky.  Remember to always use a heat protectant!
