Choosing a Black Hair Moisturizer

black-hair-moisturizerHow do you choose a black hair moisturizer?  Probably one of the first things you'e learned about healthy hair for black har is moisture. Since African-American hair tends to become more easily than other hair types, you’ll want to focus your haircare on applying and maintaining moisture. Dry hair is very prone to breakage since it lacks in elasticity.

Moisturizing is something you will need to be consistent with. You can’t just do it once and then expect it to stay that way.  It is something you will need to incorporate into your regular hair care routine. In fact, moisture should be the main part of that routine.

Water-Based Moisturizer

A water-based moisturizer will work well to add moisture directly into hair because water itself is the best moisturizer there is.  In order to make sure you’re using a water-based moisturizer, you simply need to look  at the ingredients list.  Water should be listed within the first few ingredients.  Water-based moisturizers work well for people with relaxed hair since relaxed hair is not prone to reversion from water.

Oil-Based Moisturizer

Since natural hair that has been straightened is more prone to reversion, sometimes using a water-based moisturizer just isn’t feasible.  In that case, you should choose an oil-based moisturizer. To use them properly, you need to make sure that you have already moisturized your hair with shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner.

You’ll use the oil-based moisturizer to seal in the water during the time that you are wearing your hair straight. This will help your hair to stay moisturized longer because the moisture will not be able to get out.

You can determine an oil-based moisturizer in the same way that you determine a water-based moisturizer. Simply look at the ingredients.  Oil should be the first ingredient. And water should be way down on the list. You’ll know if you accidentally used a water-based moisturizer because your hair will revert.

Important Ingredients

If you have curly or kinky hair, you’re probably always on the lookout for a black hair moisturizer. So what kinds of things should be looking for outside of water and oil-based? Well, you should see if the product contains natural oils like jojoba, avocado, grapeseed and other essential oils like ylang ylang that are known for their moisturizing effect on hair.

You’ll also want to look for products that contain shea butter. This is probably THE best product for hair moisture. And best of all, it’s all natural and works in its natural state. Carol’s Daughter products contain all natural ingredients and include shea butter as well as other moisturizing natural elements.

Heat Styling

Moisture is even more important if you are straightening your hair using various methods such as blow drying, flat ironing, or pressing with a hot comb. Heat is a huge robber of hair moisture. Make sure you are using the right products regularly to keep your hair hydrated. You’ll also want to wash your hair weekly to keep the water level balanced. If you go longer than that, your hair will get thirsty and will be much harder to hydrate, even with moisturizers, until you wash it again.

Wet Styling

If you’re not wearing your hair straight, you can either wet your hair daily by conditioner washing or you can even just spritz it with water. Use a spray bottle with distilled water and a little jojoba oil and lavender essential oil.  Spray on your hair daily and not only will it be super moisturized but it will smell heavenly!

I hope these tips will help you to find the best black hair moisturizer for your hair. Once you find it, use it consistently!
