How to Choose a Hair Stylist

Want to know how to choose a hair stylist because you've experienced so many bad ones before?

Well, this article will lay out all of the things that you need to look for an keep in mind when finding a new hair stylist.

Choose a Hair Stylist by Talking to People

choose-a-hair-stylistOne of the best ways to find a new hair stylist is to talk to other people who have healthy and shiny hair.  If you spot someone with hair you consider to be healthy and beautiful, don't hesitate to compliment them and ask them who does their hair!

If they love their hair stylist, they will be more than happy to tell you all about it and refer you to him or her.  Make sure you get the name and phone number.  Also try to get an idea of the products they use and what their prices are like.

Visit Popular WebPages

Hair care forums are an excellent way to talk to other people and find recommendations of good hair dressers in your area.  A lot of forums even have a hair stylist section dedicated to this.  A couple of forums to check out are:

LongHairCareForum.com

BlackHairMedia.com

NaturallyCurly.com

You can also visit other popular websites that display listings of hair stylists.  I found an excellent hair stylist by using these methods.  Here are a couple of places to try:

BlackVoices.com

BlackPages.com

Check out Retail Stores

When trying choose a hair stylist, you may not have considered checking out retails stores like JC Penney, Macy's and Wal-Mart.  These stores offer all types of salon services and have hair stylists who deal with all types of hair.  Simple give them a call and ask if they have someone who works with your type of hair.

When I had the rest of the my relaxed ends cut off, I did not have a hair stylist.  I called a JC Pennedy salon and asked if they had any African American hair stylists.  They did and put her on the phone so that I could talk to her.  I asked her a couple of questions and then went in to have my relaxed ends cut off.  Though I'd suggest you get a true consultations.  See below for more details on that.

Use Magazines and Online Newspapers

Magazines and online newspapers can offer an excellent way of finding the best hair stylist especially if you live in a large city like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles.  Pick up a couple of popular hair magazines like Black Hair or Hype Hair and take a look at the salon listings in the back of it.

You can also pay attention to newpaper articles online that feature the latest information on hair for more suggestions of good hair stylists.

Don't Choose a Hair Stylist without a Consultation

If you really are cautious about who does your hair (and you should be) before you have your hair done by a new hair stylist, I'd suggest you have a true in-person consultation.  You should prepare to ask the stylist just a few major questions and do not take up more than 10 minutes of their time.

Here are some questions you should cover during your hair stylist consultation:

Do not ask the hair stylist about the fees that they charge for services. This question should be asked of the receptionist.

Additionally, while you are consulting with the hair stylist, you should also do a quick once over of the salon while you're waiting.  Or you can even stay a little while longer after your consultation and observe which will give you more information on how to choose a hair stylist.

Here are some things you should look for at a salon:

Conclusion

When you decide to choose a hair stylist, you should not take it lightly.  This person can make or break your hair.  You should carefully consider what you are looking for in a stylist before you visit one.

And if you do not feel comfotable with the stylist, do not be afraid to walk away. Remember, there are millions of people and stylists in this world so being worried that you offended just one is not worth it. Find the stylist who can help you achieve your goal of long healthy hair.
