Corkscrew Curls

by Nina, Editor LHHA
(Tuesday, August 26, 2008)

Did you know that many African American women and other women with tightly curled hair is described as having Corkscrew curls?  What a beautiful, interesting description of our crazy, super curly, sometimes frizzy hair!

What are some characteristics of Corkscrew Curls?  According to Lorraine Massey of Curly Girl handbook fame, corkscrew curls are indicated by the following factors:

  • Poodle Hair especially if the hair is cut too short.

  • Lots and lots of individual curls.

  • Hair that can be somewhat dry.

  • Lots of frizz if not tamed.

  • Dry skin/scalp.

  • Curls that do not lie flat

  • Hair that takes moisturizers like it can never get enough.

Do you have corkscrew curls?  Let's see a picture!  Share a tip or two.

Corkscrew Curl Help:
by: Anonymous

I am a biracial 19 year old. My mom is white, and my dad isn't around. I live in a predominantly white community. Since everyone around me has always had "white" hair, I've never been able to control my curls, and have resorted to straightening since I was in middle school. However, daily heat abuse has wreaked havoc on my hair and my sanity. I am trying to go back to natural, but I don't know how to make my curls beautiful. I am open to ALL tips. Product tips, styling tips, be my Hair-y Godmothers and load me up!

Hair Miracle in a bottle - ELASTA QP Feels Like Silk
by: Nickye

I have corkscrew curls, and nothing, and I mean NOTHING controls it except one thing. Elasta QP Feels Like Silk. I'm really surprised I haven't heard about this on more curly sites. It works way better than the other puddings, custards, and various hair dessert named products that I've tried...and it's MUCH cheaper. It's a liquid styling gel that works wonders. Don't put anything oil based on before you use it, or else it can't coat the hair and it will be frizzy. After applying the Feels Like Silk I put a little oil or hair milk on my hair and it dries really soft. Everyone I've recommended to loves it. At $3.50 a bottle, it's a hair miracle you can't beat with a stick!

Love this blog
by: Phone Girl

I LOVE this blog, I read it all the time, its on my reader so I stay informed.

I guess I have corkscrews or eventually will have them. I am transitioning now. I am 6.5 months without a perm, did a small chop, waiting on January to do the rest of my big chop off. This blog is inspiring and helpful to me because I didn't know anything about what was going on in my transitioning, and now I have a better idea.
