Discovering My Natural Hair

by Allandra
(Maryland)

I've had relaxed hair since forever. In October 2007, I decided I wanted to grow out my relaxer, so I began transitioning to to natural hair (with the help of my hair stylist).

When April 2008 rolled around, I had a few inches of new growth, but there was no way I would do a big chop. Instead, I called up my hair stylist and asked if she could cut my hair that evening. She agreed. She cut off 6 to 8 inches of my hair. I absolutely loved my new haircut. It was a little below my shoulders (with a lot of bounce and swing).

When July 2008 rolled around, I had about 5 inches of new growth, but there was still no way I was going to do a big chop. My hair stylist chopped off enough to take my hair just to my shoulders. I loved this new haircut even more. It still had lots of bounce and swing.

Since my hair shrinks quite a bit, I'm going to continue to grow out my natural hair and slowly chop off the relaxed hair that I still have. I must admit, the transition has been going pretty darn good. I'm already in love with my curly / wavy hair. I'm not sure how long I'll be transitioning, but I'm going to continue to be patient during this time since I'm having so much fun discovering my natural hair.

Hair Transition
by: Anonymous

I am also transitioning from a perm to natural hair. I have long full hair and I am kind of worried that I will lose all my hair. I do to the hair dresser every two weeks and she she is good with my hair. What kind of products does your hair dresser use on your hair. My hair tangles really bad now when she washes and blow dries it out for me. Just trying to see what I need to do to make this transition alittle easier for me and her...lol
