Alleviating Dry Curly Hair
Do you wish you could figure out what to do with your dry curly hair? Curly hair is generally drier than straight hair due to its unique structure.
Natural Oils
The natural oils that are secreted by our scalp have a much harder time reaching the entire length of curly hair whereas travelling down the length of straight hair is pretty easy. Typically, this causes dryness and frizziness.
The best way to counteract this is to add your own moisture through conditioners and natural oils like jojoba oil depending on the level of your hairs’ dryness.
No Towel Drying
Dry curly hair can get better faster by simply avoiding the temptation to use a towel to dry your hair. Whenever I see someone take a towel and rub their hair dry on television, it just makes me cringe!
They don’t realize that they are essentially ruining their hairstyle before they even get started. Rubbing your hair with a towel causes the hair to frizz because the cuticles are being pushed all around instead of lying flat as they would if you hadn’t towel dried.
Also, it disturbs the curls. Once the moisture has been removed from those hairs here and there, there is nothing you can do to get them back outside of starting all over again.
So, it’s best to just lightly squeeze your hair to get rid of some of the water. Or you can wrap it in a microfiber cloth. But do not rub! Many curly girls also just take an old t-shirt and use to wrap their hair instead of a towel. This works well because it won’t disturb the curl and won’t remove the moisture.
Better Care & Styling
Dry curly hair can also result from damage that results from lack of care and styling. More times than not, it is simply a lack of knowledge. Simply by the way curly hair is structured, it is more prone to damage than straight hair.
However, you can work to minimize the effects of damaging your curly locks.
- Use a wide-tooth comb to style your hair or your fingers.
- Always always always use a moisturizing conditioner and a leave-in conditioner.
- Don’t shampoo your hair everyday. Use conditoner instead. Here's an article on conditioner washing.
- Add moisture to your hair using a natural oil like jojoba as necessary especially on the ends.
- Keep straightening and heat styling to a minimum.
- And remember to cover your hair at night.
Using these few simple tips, you can make a huge difference in the health of your hair and turn your dry curly hair into silky moisturized curls.
