Eczema of the Scalp

Eczema of the scalp is what a friend of mine recently declared she was suffering from.  Amazed by this terminology, I decided to do some research where I came across some interesting findings you definitely want to hear about.

Did you know that seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common type of eczema that affects the greasy parts of our body, especially the scalp? Here, it causes symptoms of ill-defined dry pink or skin colored patches with yellowish or white bran-like scale to form and is often itchy.  But it gets worse! It has the ability to spread through our entire scalp!

Now do you see why we need to know about this as women? It would be so devastating to walk around with skin coloured patches of all sorts of colours.

However, the worst part about all of this is studies have not been able to firmly prove what causes eczema of the scalp. They can only suggest that it may be because of an overgrowth of yeast called Malasezzia that causes this eczema to break out. But it just keeps getting worst as this yeast is found all over the scalp, so wherever the yeast is found, this eczema is also in that region in the scalp.

 Organic Hair Products

One of the more common seborrhoeic eczema you definitely know about is dandruff. This causes itching and scaling of the skin and varies in extremity. It may also persist for years as with scalp eczemas, as soon as the treatment is stopped, it returns immediately.

Scalp eczema is not contagious nor is it related to one’s diet but that does not mean that it should not be taken seriously! Eczema of the scalp may be heightened by illness, fatigue, psychological stress, change in climate and general reduced health.

The best way to treat this infection as it is cannot be cured, is by utilizing medicated shampoos twice weekly, steroid scalp applications and tar cream. All of these treatments aid in reducing intense itching and scaling as well as reduce the likelihood of it spreading.

Just remember that your scalp is extremely sensitive and should not be provoked by extreme hair products or any other damaging substances. It is also within your best interests to seek medical attention for remedies to your scalp eczema and not scratch your scalp to death! Figuratively!

Additionally, make sure you get plenty of vitamin Ds in your diet that may help in protecting you from the dungeons of “eczema of the scalp”!
