Evista Medication Information

Evista (generic name: Raloxifene HydroChloride) is a prescription medicine that has been attributed to hair loss .  This tablet of 60 mg dose is for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis and to lessen the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

 

And like most prescription medicine, it has some drug effects too such as headache, joint and muscle pain, leg cramps, excessive sweating, swelling of the lower legs/ankles/feet, hot flashes, flu-like symptoms, pain or burning sensation when urinating.  These are common side-effects but can be easily treated.

 

Serious side-effects are rare but this would include uterine bleeding, signs of stroke, signs of allergic reactions, blood clot in the legs or lungs, gallstones and other gall bladder problems.  Persons with history of blood clots like deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism as well as persons with incidents of strokes are prohibited from taking this drug.

 

 

Evista Hair Loss

There were two claims on the use of Evista.  One is that some users claim that they have been experiencing hair loss since beginning drug treatment.  There were no reports of hair loss during the clinical trial.  However, hair loss can be a risk of complication for some users who have pre-existing condition of thyroid disease (e.g. hypothyroidism).  Let us also take into account that users of this drug are in their postmenopausal stage where thinning or falling hair is a normal part of aging.
