Further ? re: trimming hair

by Brenda
(Columbia,S.C. USA)

I have been having my hair trimmed every 6 weeks for the last two years and my hair has been the same length. I don't believe in trimmimg hair. If at all, every 90 days. What do you think is the problem? I am 43. I do have new growth and get a relaxer every 6wks. I did read your web page about trimming. I feel like when I get a trim, the stylist is cutting off what I just grew or could she be "scissor happy"? What do you think?

Hi Brenda,

I think 6 weeks is probably too often to trim your hair. I think it is better to wait at least 8 weeks. Also, you must have a stylist who is trimming no more than half an inch. Another thing to consider is that your hair must be healthy.

If your hair is breaking off in between AND you're getting trims, then it will seem as if your hair is not growing.

If you are not using heat on your hair and you're not experiencing any hair breakage and your split ends are under control, then try going 2.5 to 3 months.

However, despite all of those things, if your hair is split and the ends are damaged, you must trim them in order to "see" any growth over time.
