Growing Black Hair with Gentle Styling
Here are some tips on growing black hair using gentle styling techniques.
Washing & Conditioning
- Do not shampoo your hair more than once a week. If you feel the need to cleanse your hair more often, use a light conditioner instead. Then use a heavier conditioner to condition your hair.
- Use a shower comb to detangle your hair while it is saturated with conditioner. The conditioner will help a shower comb glide right through it. Be gentle though. Start at the nape and go section by section until you’ve detangled all of your hair. Pin up the sides as you go so that they don’t wrap around each other.
Drying
- Always choose a medium to cool setting. Blow dry section by section gently. Your hair will retain more moisture with a cooler setting.
- Take your time and go section by section. Your hair will dry in a more even pattern.
- Let air dry as much as possible before using your blowdryer
- Blow dry for partial straightness in preparation for flat ironing.
- Use a leave-in conditioner and serum prior to drying to protect your hair
- Limit usage of dryers with combs since they can yank and pull at your hair. If you do use one, be gentle with it and use it slowly.
- Use ionic blow dryers. You can get cheaper ones at Wal-Mart and Target by Conair. Better, professional quality dryers can be purchased on Folica.com. Chi and Sedu have great blow dryers.
Hair Styling
- Choose a hair style that works for you. If you enjoy wearing your hair straight but you’re struggling with your natural hair texture, you may want to consider relaxing your hair or working with your hair texture as it is.
- If you don’t like visiting a salon often, then choose a simple hair style instead of one that requires monthly maintenance. If you're intent on growing black hair longer, it won’t require you to visit a salon as much as someone who is more interested in style. Keeping it simple helps in the quest to grow longer hair.
Trimming
- Keeping your hair trimmed regularly will help you style your hair more easily.
- Trimming will prevent tangles which will make detangling easy and blow drying easy.
- Have your hair trimmed on a 2-3 month schedule or you can trim in line with your relaxers.
Daily Maintenance
- When putting your hair up at night, be gentle with it. Take your time and don’t rush. This is a good reason to get your hair ready for bed BEFORE you get sleepy.
- Rushing to do your hair will cause you to lose more hair than necessary. Since hair already sheds at the rate of about 100 strands per day, why allow yourself to lose more by combing your hair with unnecessary roughness.
- And don’t forget to wear a scarf while sleeping or napping. Just this one tip alone can cause a tremendous difference in your hair.
- Do the same in the morning. If you’ve taken good care of your hair the night before, styling in the morning should be a breeze. You should be able to just take your hair down and go.
As you can see, growing black hair can be done by being gentle with your hair from every day styling to regular maintenance.
