Hair breakage after move to new country

by Marsha
(Norfolk, England)

Hello, I am desperate for some good advice.

I am a 36 year old black Caribbean lady and I've relaxed my hair for as long as I can remember. When I moved to the UK, my hair was bra length, strong and healthy. I moved to the UK in cold wintertime and two months after arriving, it literally stared falling out - when I combed it, touched it and washed it. Hair on the floor and everywhere. It got thinner and I kept trimming it to create the illusion of fullness.

After a few months, the nape of my neck right up to my ear (left side mainly)had less than 1/2 inch of hair. That was 3 years ago - I have cut, braided, steamed and still my nape remains short. It may grow a couple inches then beak off again. The rest of my hair is dry and brittle, and my scalp is flaky. I wear my hair short now.

My hair is currently in braids again cause I just don't know what else to do now, but I'd like to relax it again. Help please!

New Climate, New Regimen
by: Nina, LHHA Edtior

Hi Marsha,

I am awfully sorry about the problems you experienced after moving. You are not alone. Many people experience issues with their hair upon moving to a near climate.

The first thing you need to do is evaluate the climate that you now live in. Is it a humid climate or a dry climate? If it is dry, you will need to concentrate on moisture even more. If it is humid, you will have to work with the frizz and humidity by using smoothing products.

What is the water like where you live? Is it hard or soft? Try getting a shower head with a filter attached. This usually helps out a lot with problems from hard water. Also, depending on the water, you may want to check into special clarifying conditioners that help remove the hard deposits that get on your hair after repeated washing. I believe that Nexxus makes one called Aloe Rid.

The thing is that you are going to have to treat your hair a little bit differently since you moved. Evaluate your hair and see what it needs. It is going to take some time to figure it out but it will be worth it.
