It all started in 2008 when I decided to grow my hair long and research how to grow African American hair. Well I finally GOT the key: protected styles (I weave my hair for three months 4x a year), good conditioners, perm every 12 weeks, and use a product called sulu.

So around feb of 2009 my hair was past my shoulders and thick and beautiful. I started going to hair cuttery just for wash and style and the HAIR DRESSER told me she wanted to get my long hair bone straight. She did just that but after two days my hair was shedding to the point my bathroom floor was covered and two days after that my edges and back edges were almost gone.

I cried all of that work, time , effort, research into growing my hair and its all gone after two visits and a flat iron gone wrong. Now I'm starting over and adding some other products to it like mega tek and we shall see.

I had the same experience - my hair was natural and long - then my hair dresser flat ironed it straight - just for a change - although my hair didn't fall out it was split end from root to tip. I went to an expensive hair dresser and there was nothing they could do to my hair without risking it falling out. It has taken me five years to re-grow it to 3/4 of its lenght.

I never had that experience. For one thing I condition wash than air dry. The next day after some protector put on I then priced to use the instyler on medium. I've then the following day to ensure straight roots use a flat iron. My hair stays this easy when wrapped for two weeks. And I wear it down.

What is wrong with flat ironing hair straight if someone know what they are doing? It's just as effective as straightening with a straigthening comb. Whenever you add heat to your hair it must be moisturized and protective from the heat as much as possible to keep it from drying out and ultimately breaking off.

I am so sorry about your experience. Years ago, I had a stylist promise me that a relaxer and color could be done in the same service. It took 2 years to grow out that disaster. Two things about your post (1) after your research, you should have known better than to allow anyone to flat iron your hair straight. Of course it was going to burn off. I have never known anyone at Hair Cuttery to do excellent work, they may be stylist but not co-partners in hair care. I don't know if where you live there aren't enough salons with professionals who work with your hair pattern, but at the end of the day, you share responsiblity with the "professional" who damages your hair when you agree to services that you know will damage your hair. My personal favorite stylist sabotage is the "cut your hair to make it grow" scam. It's a great way to get more money for undermining my efforts. Tell everyone what happened to you, but take back control. Non-professional stylists shouldn't be tolerated.

I'm so sorry about your bad hair experience! You would think a professional would know how to properly care for your hair smh. So glad you didn't lose the resolve and are staying strong on your healthy hair journey :)
