Hair Distresses

by Brenda
(USA)

Dehydrated

Dehydrated

I have coarse, thick hair.

I do not have black hair; it is straight and mid-back length. I want my hair to be healthy and grow more quickly.

My hair is dry. I used Enjoy for a while and had to switch to Tresemme because it got too expensive.

I hardly deep condition my hair anymore. I have not found the right products in the past. When I did I used Redken protein sticks.

I usually trim my hair in a 3-4 months period of time. I hardly ever go to a stylist for a trim.

I blow dry my hair and flat iron it daily. I would love to stop flat ironing it but I do because if I don't my hair gets super frizzy.

I have had 3 perms and reverse perms in the past 4 years. I'm sure this has not helped the breakage I have on the very crown of my head or the split ends I have always battled with.

Your hair sounds beautiful but I definitely think you can make a few changes to get healthy hair that retains length!

You're definitely going to have to stop flat ironing your hair every day. You say that your hair gets frizzy if you don't flat iron it. Has it always been that way? Or since you have been straightening it? Sometimes straightening damage can lead to frizzy hair (because it's damaged) and then it does tend to look better (for a little while) when it's straightened.

The first thing you need to do is get a good trim. Sounds like you may lose a little bit of your length but you'll gain in back in no time since you'll be taking better care of your hair.

On daily basis, I'd recommend using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner along with a leave-in conditioner. I'd actually recommend the
Neutrogena Triple Moisture Product Line

. They have a shampoo and conditioner as well as two leave-ins to choose from and a deep conditioner and serum. Always use a leave-in conditioner prior to styling. It will help with the dryness and split ends. Concentrate on the length instead of the roots.

Start deep conditioning your hair every week for a while until your hair health gets better. Then you can switch to every two weeks. Make sure to deep condition with heat.

Here is an article on deep conditioning properly.

For daily styling, I'd alternate blow drying your hair smooth with wearing protective styles. By that, I mean wearing your hair up. You can put your hair up while it is wet or dry it a little bit and then put it up. Try to use your blow dryer on the medium or cool setting. Also, if you don't have a profession dryer, get one. A professional Ionic hair dryer will dry your hair faster and help it to retain more moisture.
The Chi Rocket is a good one.

I hope this helps you out!
