Hair Loss After Surgery
If you’re dealing with hair loss after surgery than you’re probably wondering what happened to cause it.
I’ve never had any type of surgery since birth and I hope I will never have any. Yes, I know, lucky me, but I feel sad for those who have to just to get better. I would guess it's a really traumatic experience, huh?
It’s quite hard to imagine the pain after the surgery and it must be even painful to move. But it only takes time to heal wounds and what a reassuring feeling that someday the pain will go away.
This thought makes it bearable until one day while you’re showering and notice that your drain is clogged by a bunch of hair strands and it’s all yours. Waaah!
Reasons for Losing Hair After Surgery
Why do we lose so much hair following surgery?
Here are some of the reasons for this unpopular side effect:
- It might be the anesthesia infused in your body. Anesthesia may affect the hair follicles to the extent of shutting down the hair fiber production.
- It could be stress brought on by the inconvenience and discomforts of suffering the disease and the anxiety after the surgical operation.
- It could be that you now lack nutrients like protein and iron. Remember that before surgery you were only allowed to take selected foods.
- It can be that you had some complications and lost a lot of blood during the procedure. The reduced blood flow in your body especially to the skin and scalp will not provide all the nutrients your hair needs to keep living and growing. Like in business, if you no longer have liquidity, you might as well close the operation.
- It might be because the you're actually having brain surgery or some sort of procedure dealing with your head. They shaved your hair before the surgery but after a few months, it doesn't seem to be growing back. Probably, there was too much pressure in your scalp and the blood supply in that area became limited causing temporary cessation in hair growth.
- It might be that you're experiencing hair loss after surgery due to the medications prescribed to you. At times, after the operation, you still need to take some medicine to help you recover. You should check with your doctor if you're experiencing a side-effect leading to hair loss.
Many people have indicated issues with losing hair after undergoing weightloss surgery or gastric bypass.
Recovery Period
Just remember that the experience of hair loss after surgery is normal and temporary. It usually occurs 3 months post surgery, though some experienced an immediate effect.
The length of time for recovery of your hair depends on how you nourish yourself with proper nutrition. However, don't despair, you can also focus on hair loss treatments such as shampoos and even using emu oil or castor oil on your scalp to rejuvinate your hair follicles.
