Hair Texturizers:  What You Need to Know

hair texturizersAre you going crazy dealing with your super curly hair?  Texturizers may be the answer for you especially if you don't want to lose your curly hair but just want more versatility and manageability!  Having natural hair that is very curly, I sometimes consider what it would be like to have a texturizer.

Many people who are natural considering texturizing their hair to make it a little bit easier for them to manage and to add some curl definition to really curly, coily, or kinky hair. Let's look at some basic information on hair texturizers.

Texturizing Explained

Mild relaxers are typically used as a hair texturizer. The relaxer is applied in a specific way so as to avoid removing the natural curl formation from the hair. Have your hair texturized is best performed by a professional stylist. A stylist will know how to apply the texturizer and how long to leave it on. Trying to do your own texturizer can result in receiving results that are more like a relaxer - straightened hair. Professional stylists will give you a result of elongated curls and a looser curl texture.

Chemicals in Texturizers

A sodium hydroxide relaxer - or a lye relaxer - can be used to texturize hair that is kinky, curly or coily.  Using this type of texturizer will require that your scalp is based.

Calcium Hydroxide is a no-lye relaxer and can also be used as a hair texturizer for kinky, curly, or coily hair.  This type of relaxer works well for those with a sensitive scalp.  However, no-lye relaxers can also be somewhat dryinig to the hair unlike lye relaxers.  Your scalp must also be based for this relaxer.

Ammonium Thioglycolate is the chemical used for curly perms/Jheri curls.  This chemical is really not strong enough for texturizing kinky hair.  It will probably work ok for curlies or wavies.  This chemical differs from the others in that it is applied after shampooing the hair.

Maintenance of Texturized Hair

Caring for texturized hair is pretty much the same as caring for natural hair.  You will have to get touch-ups to the roots as your hair grows out.  A good schedule to follow would be every 3 o 5 months. You'll find it easier to wear wash n' go hair styles and it will be a little easier for you to get your hair straightened.

Conclusion

Hair texturizers are a good alternative to completely relaxing your hair if you enjoy wearing curly hair or straightened hair.  It will potentially make your hair easier to care for and give you more definition and less frizz to your kinky or coily hair.
