Healthy Hair Tips for
At-Home Maintenance

Do you have any healthy hair tips for maintaing my hair at home?

My relaxed hair has become brittle and dry. How do I maintain it in between salon visits?

I would really like to learn to care for my own hair.  I have a stylist but I do not want to depend on her anymore.  I get tired of her loud-talking and gossiping while I’m sitting in her chair.  Yet, I still feel a little obligated to her because she is the only one who can cut my hair in its style.

She’s always recommended products for me to buy but they just don’t do anything for my hair.  She then always says that I use too much heat on my hair and I don’t.  I only use heat once a week.  She wants me to visit her every two weeks so that my hair can be healthier but I cannot afford that.

I am just getting sick of her.  I really just want to find the right products that will make my hair healthier while I find a new stylist.

Please help!

Well, I have quite a few healthy hair tips for at-home hair maintenance.   There a quite a few things you can do to improve health of your hair and keep it healthy in between your visits to your stylist.

Deep Condition

Deep condition your hair at least every other week.  You can also consider alternating deep conditioning treatments weekly by using  a moisturizing conditioner one week and a light-protein conditioner the next week.  With a protein conditioner, make sure to still follow it up with a moisturizing conditioner.

Minimize Heat

Minimize heat usage as much as possible.  Since your hair is relaxed, you can greatly benefit from roller setting your hair.  Other heat-free styles you can try are braid outs.  You simply braid your hair while it is wet and then take it down once it’s dry.  You’ll get a nice wavy look without any heat!  Additionally, you can just wash your hair and wear it in a bun for a few days.  Keep rotating list of heat-free styles to eliminate as much heat as possible.  Try to use heat only every two weeks.

Trim Ends

Keep your ends trimmed regularly.  If you’re going to the salon every 2 months to get your relaxer touch-ups, remember to get your ends trimmed then.  You can also learn how to trim your own hair.  If you have a particular hair style, it may be more difficult for you to keep your hair trimmed at home.  In addition to minimizing heat, trimming ends one of the healthy hair tips you should not ignore.

Good Products

Use products that work for your hair texture and type.  Pay attention to how your hair feels when you wash and condition it and what happens when you use certain products on it.  Several good lines of hair products are Keracare, Mizani, Paul Mitchell, and Neutrogena Triple Moisture.

Bedtime Care

Continue to care for your hair at bedtime.  Keep it covered with a satin scarf and remember to moisturize your ends every single night before you put your hair up.  This will keep your hair from getting dry and tangly which can lead to split ends.

Weather and Fabrics

Pay close attention to your hair when you are outside.  If it’s windy, put your hair up so that it does not dry out.  Also keep your hair off fabrics like wool and angora which will eat up your hair over time.

Hair Tools

Use good quality salon tools on your hair.  Use seamless bone combs, boar’s bristle brushes.  Use ionic blow dryers and ceramic flat irons for heat styling.

Following these healthy hair tips, you should begin to see your hair change over time from unhealthy to healthy.
