Is my hairdresser doing more harm than good?

by Sierra
(Atlanta, GA)

I have natural hair and have been post relaxer for 10 months. All of my relaxed ends are now gone. I went to the hairdresser to get my normal wash and blow. Last night I did a pre-poo with Olive Oil Conditioner and Vatika Oil. Being that i'm natural now, it seems that my hair needs a lot of moisture.

Upon my arrival, I told her about my hair being dry in the front and the back. I also mentioned about maybe to much heat was being put on my hair and could we go with roller setting to cut down on the heat and see if it would make the ends smoother. (That way she would only have to flat iron the roots if need be.) Before shampooing, she did an oil pre-treatment of almond oil that had wheat protein in it. Then she put me under the dryer for 10 minutes. She did her normal wash and shampoo. My hair came out very soft and the tight curls at the back seemed to have loosened. (So the pre-poo worked very well).

Then she combed it out and sit me back under the dryer for a little bit. After she takes me from under the dryer, she puts a little oil on my hair and blow drys it. Then she goes through and straightens it with a flat iron and certain parts with a straightening comb. Keep in mind she straightens it just to get the straightness. Then she goes back in and flat irons it to the style that I want.

Okay, there are certain sections in the back and in the top of my hair where the ends seem to damaged. This was before this visit as well. Two weeks ago I got layers cut in the back and bangs. My hair grows really fast so the hair cut is grown out. At first she seems to think that the ends were coming from the way I sleep. Yesterday, she mentions it seemed to happen where my highlights are growing out. So, I convinced her to roller set my hair on the next visit and as well as trim my ends. She's also going to put color in my hair (jet black, I love jet black hair) to get rid of the color and condition my hair. there is too much color left to cut it out. She also mentioned that going back to a darker color would help to seal the cuticles of my hair.

So, I am going to continue my pre-poos the night before going to her. I also bought some Cantu Shea Butter Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment cream that can be used daily. I mixed the portion I was using with Vatika Oil and massaged into my scalp. I have wrapped my hair and put a little bit on my damaged ends. My goal is to have healthly hair and to grow my hair to mid back. It's currently reaches my shoulder.

Hopefully in two more weeks, it will be better since she will be using less heat. To me, I think that she is using to much heat on my hair. Do you agree?

Yes, Too Much Heat
by: Nina, Editor LHHA

Hi Sierra,

I also think your stylist is using too much heat on your hair. She should be able to get your hair straight with a flat iron alone. I tend to not trust straightening combs b/c they are not ceramic.

It looks like she is using the straightening comb to straighten - but if you look at your hair, you will see that it is not smooth. This means that your cuticles are not laying down.

When you use a ceramic flat iron, it smooths down the cuticles of your hair which is apparent when you look at your hair and see the immediate shine.

I think you should try to find a new stylist who knows how to use a ceramic flat iron to straighten your hair.

Also, in between your visits to the salon, you can roller set your own hair and flat iron your roots. Then only visit a stylist when you need trims.

I hope this helps!
