Do You Know Your Hair Type?

Though you probably already know your hair type, I want to explain to you how I think of hair types so that you can understand my website.

This page will talk about the following curly hair types: Natural hair which will be referred to as loose, medium, or tight curls, or kinky, natural hair that is typically straightened by various methods, or relaxed hair.

Curly Hair Types

Natural Hair

know-your-hair-typeWhen discussing natural hair, it's referring to hair that has not been chemically relaxed. Hair that has been colored but not relaxed is still considered natural. Even if you are relaxed, you should still be able to recall somewhat what your natural hair type is. However, many of you may have been relaxed for so long that you do not remember just as I didn't!

Natural hair tends to fall into various curly hair types: a loose curl like Chili of TLC (3a), a medium curl like the twins Tia and Tamera Mowry (3b), and tight curls like Rachel True (3c).

Kinky natural hair is very tightly curled or coiled (4a). An example of this hair type would be Jill Scott. Hair that is lacking a distincitve curl pattern is considered 4b.

Knowing your natural hair type will help you pick and choose products that can work better for your hair. It is also good to know your natural hair type if you tend to straighten your hair.

Straightened Natural Hair

When referring to straightened natural hair, it's hair that has been pressed with a pressing comb, ironed with a flatiron, or smoothed out with rollers in a rollerset.  Having natural hair provides you with many hair styling options such as switching back between curly and straight as long as you adhere to the best hair care methods!  Click here to read a tutorial on roller setting natural hair.

Most of you may not want the issues that come along with straightening natural hair (the reversion!) and so you choose to relax your hair.

Relaxed Hair

Relaxed hair has been chemically straightened and thus the actual hair has been altered. There are various degrees of relaxing hair such as relaxing it lightly to leave a bit of wave/curl or relaxing it bone straight.

With proper application of relaxers and excellent hair care, relaxed hair can be a great convenience! However, you may not wish to relax fully and instead choose to texturize your hair instead.

Texturized Hair

Many women with curly or kinky hair choose to texturize their hair so that they have a looser curl pattern and can wear curly styles. They are also able to straighten their hair a little bit easier than completely natural hair depending on the type of curl pattern.

Texturized hair can help lengthen a curly hair style for tightly curled and kinked curled women so show off more length! Check out this article on hair texturizers.

Conclusion

If you know your hair type, you will be able to understand my website a little bit better. There are sections of my website where you can read about the care of these various hair types.

Still confused about where you actually fit in? A good friend or family member will probably know your hair type immediately!
