Long Layers... are you sure?

Ok, so I've worn my hair long and (yes, I dare say it) with fringe since was a kid. My hair is very fine and slightly wavy (though not enough to be carefree-wavy) and I've been told that I have a lot of it. I've always been ok with the idea of just wearing it straight and one length.

Over the years, I've had a few stylist add a few quick layers, nothing too dramatic and it was ok but I usually let them grow out. Very last minute one day, and 3 hours before I was to jump on a plane to go on vacation, I decided to go see my regular hair stylist for a trim.

Of course she wasn't there but I was promised that this other girl was FABULOUS with long hair. Ummmm... ok. So she is very young and I had to wonder just how long she had actully been doing this. Two years she said. Ummmm... ok. I told her to just trim up the ends and to taper the sides. She says "I see you've had long layers" I told her, with a blush and hunch, "Nope just breakage from the coloring" She says " Ok well I'll just clean that up for you" and she lift at handful of hair up off the top layer and takes off 10 INCHES!. I haven't had that much taken off since I was three and my Mom thought the Dorothy Hammel hair cut was cute!

I was so stunned I couldn't say anything. I thought, "Huh... wonder what Karma brought this on." At that point there was nothing else for her to do but try to even off the other side, which I assumed she was trying to do. She kept talking about how she would have loved to have long hair but she always trimmed it and could never let it grow out. OHHHH!!! I thought. She had Hair envy! Ok, so moral of the story is if you have long hair and need a cut, maybe don't pick someone with short, choppy haircut that looks as if she took a machete to it daily. She may be working through issues and take it out on you.
