Make Your Own Essential Oil
Essential oil can be expensive! Make your own essential oil and save yourself some money.
How to Make Essential Oil Steps
-
The first step in the process is to determine which type of herb, flower or tree that you want to use. Doing some research to determine which oil is best suited for your needs is a good place to start.
-
Once you have determined which type of oil you want to use than you can either buy the botanicals that you will use or hopefully it will be readily available outside your back door.
-
You will need a slow cooker, some carrier oil (olive oil is best for this process) and some cheese cloth or other fine cloth.
-
Gather up a handful of flowers, herbs or tree parts that you have decided to use and mix it with two cups of olive oil. Mix it up well and put it in the slow cooker for 6-7 hours.
-
Allow the mixture to cool. Then run it through the cheese cloth or other fine cloth to strain the oil through. Store the oil in a tightly lidded jar, make sure to mark the date (essential oil only lasts around six months). Store it in a cool dark area of the cupboards.
- This process can also be carried out by using a mason jar and the sunlight. Add two cups of oil and at least one ounce of herbs to a mason jar seal it tightly and sit in direct sunlight for two weeks.
Homemade Essential Oils Tips and Tricks
The key to successfully make your own essential oil is the quality of the ingredients that are used. The best practice is to grow your own herbs and flowers for use in essential oil recipes, but of course that is not always possible.
Look for a reputable dealer of organic botanicals to insure the purest quality. Do not skimp on the quality of the carrier oil.
You can save money and insure the purity of the essential oil by making it yourself !
