My hair growth

by MCB
(Boston, MA)

Hello . . . what an interesting webpage with lots of interesting information. Recently, I texlaxed using Phytospecific 1 (mild strength); I was very pleased w/ the results.

I also recently just purchased a steamer (yeh!!!!!!!!!!!).

Question: with relaxed or chemically altered hair, how many strands should be coming out in the comb a day? I moisturize w/ glycerin and water or s-curl and seal w/ a bit of coconut oil.

Other question is can I just seal at night w/ Jojoba oil and get moisturization for the ends. How much is too much? Okay . . . enough w/ the questions--huh? (well, your website has encouraged me).

Currently my hair is shoulder length and hasn't been anything past that . . . I would like to reach APL at least by October-November and am not sure if that is possible. Please share your expertise. Thanks for the informative website!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No glycerin - no s-curl
by: Nina D, Editor

HI MCB,

Thank you for the website compliments. I hope you continue to find it useful.

On average, we all lose about 100 strands of hair per day. If you only comb your hair in the morning and at night, you should not lose more than that. You will tend to lose more than that when you wash your hair b/c you are getting hairs that haven't yet had a chance to untangle themselves from the rest of your hair to be seen.

I do not recommend using glycerin or s-curl for moisture. My personal belief is that these product make the hair too soft and results in breakage. If you've been using these, I would suggest using protein treatments to strengthen your hair. Read this page on my website:

I think it is just fine to get your moisture from conditioning and deep conditioning as well as leave-in conditioning. If you've done all of those steps correctly, the only thing you need to do is protect that moisture by sealing it. You can do that with serum or jojoba oil like you already are doing. So, continue using the jojoba oil on your ends nightly - with a light touch to keep your hair from getting oily.
