Natural African American Hair Detangling
The absolute best method for natural African American hair detangling is in the shower under the showerhead. However, in some cases you may need to further detangle your hair after washing and conditioning in order to prepare it for straightening, twists, rollersets, braidouts or other hair styles. Here are a few tips to make this process easy.
Tools Needed
- Wide tooth comb
- Leave In Conditioner
- Moisturizer
- Duckbill clips or butterfly clips
- Towel
- Scrunchies
Sectioning
Section your hair into 4-8 sections. This will make it much easier to apply products and to detangle without the other hair getting in the way. Just take each section and clip them out of the way with a duckbill clip or a hair pin
Leave-In Conditioning
To prepare your hair for detangling you will first need to apply some leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioner will provide a slick surface for the comb to glide through more easily. You can use a liquid leave-in or a creamy leave-in. Make sure to get the leave-in conditioner on every strand! It will be easy since your hair is already in sections.
Get Started
With your first section of hair unclipped. Grab your wide tooth comb and gently start at the ends and comb an inch or two until it's detangled. Then move up another inch or two and detangle to the ends. Continue this process until you get to your roots. If you are having a tough time with a section, slow down and look closely at your hair to see what's going on. Maybe there is a tiny knot that you need to tend to. One of the most important things with combing out natural African American hair is to be patient and gentle! I promise you will keep more hair on your head this way. Once you finish a section, go ahead and clip it back up so it doesn't get in your way.
Moisturizing
Continuing to keep your hair in the sections that you created, grab your moisturizer and apply it to those sections. Depending on your hair's condition, you'll need thicker or lighter moisturizer. Once you apply the moisturizer, comb it through to make sure you get it on every strand. Your hair should be pretty easy to comb at this point.
Styling
Congratulations! Your natural African American hair is ready to be styled! You can now go ahead and rollerset, create twists or blow dry. It's good to keep your hair in the sections you created as you do either of these styles.
