Natural Hair Burnt with Ceramic Irons.

by Barbara
(Indianapolis, IN.)

My Hair has been natural for over 2 years. The main style that I wear is the afro...and I love it, but my hair grade is thick and curly, and not in need of alot of heat. Unfortunately, I decided to have my hair ironed out a month ago, and when leaving the shop I realized my hair smelled severely burnt. I figured that the smell would go away, but after 2 weeks it didn't. I washed my hair, expecting to see my hair curl up, but instead I saw alot of straight hair and my hair smelled horrible(burnt); and when it dries, it is frizzy. Do I need to cut all of my hair off, and start over? :(

Tips for Your Damaged Hair
by: Nina, Editor LHHA

Barbara,

I am really sorry that this has happened to you!

Based on what you've describe I agree with you in that your hair has been burned. What type of iron was used on your hair? Do you remember what products were used and the procedure used to straighten your hair? That can help me to determine why your hair was damaged. Generally, you should be able to straighten natural hair with a ceramic flat iron safely.

Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to reverse the damage done to your hair. You can try doing a protein treatment. Give ORS Hair Mayo a try following the directions on the jar. I have heard from others that sometimes that helps the hair to revert. Even if those straight parts do not begin to revert, this treatment will strengthen your hair.

You can gradually trim off the straight ends as your hair grows. You don't need to start all over. :)a

Please report back and let me know it's going.

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.
