Reaction to Hair Dye
Disclaimer: This article is not be taken as medical advice. Always seek the advice of your doctor.
Reaction to hair dye has been a hot topic in media for quite some time in the last few years. Especially the connection of hair dyes with cancer, although it has been analyzed by several legitimate organizations including world health organization that there is a connection between cancer and hair dye. But this risk is minimal and those who work at barber shops or hair salons are more prone to such disease rather than the one who receives the hair dye.
Today’s hair care products are much safer. But it is believed that those women who have been using hair dye since 1980’s have an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However if you have not developed any symptoms then there is nothing to worry about.
There are also several other reactions to hair dye that are believed to exist. For example, it is a common belief that using a bleaching agent may burn the hair or in severe cases may prove infectious. Other research has shown that women who have used dyes for 30 years or have been using it since the 80s are almost twice as prone to rheumatoid arthritis. But it is not yet clear whether it is because of using hair dye for 30 years or is to using the dyes that were manufactured before 1980’s.
There is a large group of women who complain about the allergic reactions they have while using hair dyes. These allergic reactions may include difficulty in breathing or severe itchiness on the scalp that can persist for few days.
Another thing that is worth discussing is the use of dyes of unusual colors like blue, yellow etc. These dyes are very harmful as they contain lead acetate and constituents derived from coal tar. Both of these ingredients can be harmful to the reproductive and immune system of the body.
All the above mentioned conditions are very rare is just important to note for safety measure. The products now in the market are fairly safe to use. In fact you are advised to test the dye on the skin first before applying to scalp. To avoid further risks, it is advised to use dark and permanent dyes or just go for the natural dyes which are harmless. These are just some possibilities of a reaction to hair dye. I hope it was helpful to you.
