My First Relaxer
|
|
By the time I was 12 years old, my mom finally decided that it was time for me to get a relaxer. She took me to her stylist who
supposedly did some Hollywood hair like Tina Turner. (I am not sure I
even believe this though he did have pictures of her in his shop.) I
remember that his name was George and my mom just loved him! I guess
she trusted him to relax my hair. I
remember my sister talking
when she'd get her hair relaxed and how it would burn. When I had the
cream applied to my hair, I was so excited to know my sister
was finally wrong about something. It didn't burn at all! |
George proceeded to rinse my hair only to tell my mom that the
straightening didn't take. Who knew of such a thing? Well, I thought that
was fine - I would just have to "suffer" with my thick braids again.
But George, being the professional that he was, applied more
cream all over my hair! Talk about burning! It was the most horrible
experience! My sister was right after all.
That was the beginning of
my hair getting thinner and shorter.
Within about two years, my hair had gone from being down my back
to being about armpit length. It was not healthy at all and very
uneven and dry.
This was a result of visiting George for touch-ups that
never did quite work, along with washing and blow drying my hair weekly
after swimming class. (Well, except for those times when I was lazy
and didn't bother to wash out the chlorine at all.)
