Stretching between relaxing!!!

by Jen
(London UK)

Hi,
I have very thick relaxed hair that is just above my shoulders. I've been relaxing my hair for about 11 years now and I treated my hair very badly for the last 6 years.

My hair was in very bad condition so I started wearing a weave 2 years ago and that really grew my hair. I took my weave out last month and had a relaxer but because my hair was so thick it did not relax properly so I still had regrowth. So at the moment I deep condition every 2 weeks with Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise and shampoo and condition with Aphogee products. I moisturize with Profectiv Anti Breakage Strengthening Moisturizer.

I've never allowed my regrowth to grow this much without relaxing and I don't know whether that is good for my hair or bad? I've been following your advice via this site on how to keep relaxed hair healthy including trimming the ends which I've not done for a while! I'm happy that my hair has grown alot in the last 3 years in terms of thickness and length but would like to achieve BSL this time next year.

Do you have any advice on how to take care of my hair more and how I can achieve longer hair?

Also the middle of my hair is long but the sides are shorter especially near the temple area I've tried everything but it just doesn't grow!

Great website and very helpful :)

Jen

Stretching Relaxers isn't for Everyone
by: Nina, Editor LHHA

Hi there,

It sounds like you are doing good things for your hair. Continue with the deep conditioning and get moving on the trimming. Trimming will really make a difference. It's better to do a good trim now rather than waiting for our hair to grow longer. So, you may have to trim a little more this time but once you're on schedule and treating your hair well, you'll notice that your ends stay pretty healthy.

Other things you can do is wear your hair up a lot. Keep it from getting dry and rubbing on your clothing.

As far as stretching your relaxers, it doesn't work for everyone and it sounds like it isn't working for you. If you have a lot of trouble combing through your hair and it's time for a relaxer, then get one. You'll lose less hair when it's not so hard to detangle.

For your temple area, make sure you aren't wearing your hair styles too tightly and keep the area moisturized. Also, start massaging the area regularly to keep the blood flowing.
