Causes of Sudden Hair Loss

Are you wondering about some of the causes of sudden hair loss in women? Well, there are many biological as well as external factors which can cause women to suddenly lose their hair.

Some are gradual while some are sudden, as it can catch you by surprise.  It’s not some kind of surprise that anyone would want to anticipate though.

Losing hair of about 50-100 strands a day is normal because our hair has its own life cycle, too.  The reason is that we lose the old ones so they can be replaced by new and healthier ones.

However, if it has become excessive and unusual especially at a young age, this losing of hair in excess can be upsetting.  To avoid that situation, we need to know what's causing this sudden hair loss.  And we are talking about not only the hair on our head but on our entire body as well.

  Control Excessive Hair Loss

Main Causes of Sudden Hair Loss:

  1. Age
  2. Pregnancy
  3. Chemotherapy
  4. Fungal infections
  5. Thyroid disease
  6. Hormonal imbalance
  7. Scarring of the scalp
  8. Vitamin A overdose
  9. Lack of proper nutrition
  10. Post-menopausal conditions
  11. Connective tissue diseases like lupus
  12. Birth control pills and anti-depressants
  13. Inflammation/infections on the hair follicle
  14. Stress caused by an illness or major surgery
  15. Constant physical, emotional or mental stress
  16. Hereditary or genetic diseases like alopecia
  17. Frequent shampooing, blow drying and styling
  18. Chemical damage as from the use of hair colorants
  19. Radio-active therapy or exposure to any radio-active substances
  20. Improper care of hair like too tight ponytails or any style that hurts the scalp
  21. Medications used for gout, cancers, blood thinners (anti-coagulant) and other serious illnesses.

As you can see, the reasons range from nutrition deficiencies, disease, medication and drug treatments, as well as stress and other medical reasons.

Hair is very important not only because it covers and protects our scalp, but it also enhances our beauty.  As they say, it is our “crowning glory”. A dazzling and healthy head of hair is typically one of our sources of confidence and self-esteem. And for most people, losing it could be bothersome, embarrassing, uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable.  Though in some instances, it can be treated and in time, hair can grow back.

However for some diseases we might incur, hair loss can be permanent or irreversible.  We can buy artificial hair or wigs to camouflage our hair loss but it’s nothing compared to a natural hair.  There are some things which we can’t control like heredity but for the things we can, it’ll be better to do it now or else regret it later.  Knowing the causes for sudden hair loss should help you determine ways to prevent it and treat it sooner rather than later.
