Transitioning hair

by Stacey
(Toronto, ON)

Hi,

I want to start off by saying I love your site and allll of the information that is provided. It has helped me a lot through this difficult process I've recently started.

I have decided to stop using chemical relaxers because as I've read, it deteriorates your hair and I believe it, because I used to have VERY VERY thick hair and now my hair is nearly thin!I'm very frustrated!

My hair is in single braids right now and has been for almost a month to minimize combing and styling it throughout the winter.

So one of my questions is: what kind of routine should I be doing to help my transitioning hair until I have found a comfortable point to cut the ends off?

To elaborate, do I use the non-chemical relaxer after I take my hair out of single braids to avoid the breakage that can occur because of the 2 hair textures, and then in a few months put single braids back in?

I'm pretty sure it's not good to single braid back to back. If you disagree with what I've just stated then at what point in this transitioning process would you recommend that I use the non-chemical relaxer?

I have purchased the Bodiphier non-chemical relaxer and am looking into the Herbalaxer as well to use after I take may braids out in another month or less.

Thank you so much for your time and God bless!

Transitioning Hair

Hi Stacey,

I would not recommend that you use another relaxer on your hair if you are trying to transition. Or maybe I misunderstood. Are you trying to transition to natural hair or are you trying to transition to a different type of relaxer?

If you're trying to transition to natural hair, discontinue the use of the relaxer period and concentrate on caring for your transitioning hair.

Click on the "Relaxed Hair" menu button to your left and check out the articles on transitioning.

Now, if you're trying to transition to another type of relaxer, I would suggest doing a ton of research. I have not heard too much about the relaxers that you are talking about. So, do some research on the net before applying to your hair.

Also, be careful with the single braids. These can also thin your hair out.
