Transitioning to Natural w/ Super-Thick Hair

by Je'Nean
(Lawton, OK, USA)

I've decided to transition from relaxed to natural, mainly b/c my hair grows soo quickly; it's almost as if as soon as I relax 2wks at the most, I've got new growth. I'm fortunate for that, but it has proved to be a problem w/ maintaining.

I started transitioning about month & half ago and have noticed that my hair is breaking around the edges and seems dry and brittle. My hair length was a little past my shoulders and when I decided to transition I cut 4" off of my hair, now its a little past my chin. My hair has a moderate wave pattern but no curl. According to my mother, there really wasn't reason for her to relax my hair besides its thick.

I need tips to get through this transition, b/c the relaxer is calling out to me :) Right now I have about 3/4" of new growth that appears to be an extra layer of padding on my head, then straight hair.

I attempted to roller set but found it hard to do b/c of the length and it became hard. Do you have any tips for products that may help w/ dryness & breakage and styling tips to help me make it through?

FYI: my hair when relaxed my hair holds moisture well, but now the relaxed hair seems to be VERY dry. And its becoming harder to flat iron the new growth for fear of burning myself; I have a very good ION ceramic flat iron, that gets HOT. Any tips would be appreciated, thank you.

Moisturize Transitioning Hair
by: Nina, Editor LHHA

Hi Ja'Nean,

Thank you for visiting my website and congratulations on your decision to transition to natural hair!

For transitioning and keeping your roots moisturized and supple, I recommend applying a moisturizer to your new growth to just past the line of demarcation and then proceeding with styling. Do this every single time you condition your hair.

Notice, I said condition. Try to only shampoo your hair every couple of weeks and then try to use a very gentle shampoo. Look in a natural store and try something like Jason's Naturals or Nature's Gate.

Deep condition your hair every week and I recommend conditioner washing every 3 days.

You should also try to lay off the flat iron as it could lead to breakage. With transitioning, sometimes you have to stick to very low-maintenance styles.

Good Luck to you!
