Transitioning without severe breakage

by Morgan
(Virginia)

I am 18 years old and have been trying to go natural for almost two years now. One of the things I am worried about is causing severe breakage to my hair. I have done some research on other websites and they say that pressing the natural hair is bad and will cause breakage. I recently began flat ironing my hair because of the two different textures that I have, besides I want to hide "my nappy roots." Is that bad to do?

Also, I do not want to cut off my hair at all. My hair now is past shoulder length, and I want to keep it that way. I do not want a short cut. Is it okay for me to trim my ends instead of chopping it all off?

Also, should I stop wearing ponytails for fear that it may cause more breakage? These are issues of mine that I just do not know the answer to.

Also, how much should I wash and condition my hair, now that the transitioning phase has taken place? I have been washing my hair every two weeks and then deep condition it. Is that enough?

I really hope you can answer my questions because now that I see my true hair texture, I love it and want to continue with the transition. Thanks.

Hi Morgan,

Congrats on your decision to transition!

I have a friend who is long-term transitioning by wearing her hair straight. She roller sets her hair and then flat irons it and wears it that way for two weeks. She also sees her stylist about every month or every other month where the stylist blow dries and flat irons and then trims her hair. If it is done safely - you won't experience breakage. If your hair is already damaged though, it is probably not a good idea. For instance, I could not do that b/c my hair was damaged from a relaxer.

You can trim your ends gradually and transition as long as you want as long as you keep your hair healthy.

Be careful with the ponytails. Make sure they are loose. And alternate them with simple loose updos. You don't want to put too much stress on the hair.

Washing your hair every two weeks is fine. If you notice your hair feeling dry, then it's probably time to wash it.
