Steps for Two Strand Twists
The steps below are the easiest method I know to achieve two strand twists.
- Shampoo or condition-wash hair. Apply leave-in conditioner and moisturizer. Detangle thoroughly so that there are no tangles.
- Part your hair in 4 sections so that it’s easy to work with. Pin up 3 of the sections while you start working on the 1st section. It’s best to start with one of the sections in the back so you can work your way from front to back.
- Taking the 1st section, start making mini parts with your comb if you want them nice and straight or you can do it with your fingers if you want your parts to look more natural. It will also take you less time if you use your fingers.
- Before you start your twist, use a pomade or cream to keep your twists moisturized. I’d suggest Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey since it will provide shine and moisture.
- Make sure to comb through the section before you begin using gentle strokes. Using a Denman brush will help you detangle your hair thoroughly in preparation for twisting.
- Take the individual section and just twist them around each other starting at the root and working your way to the ends. Due to your curls, you shouldn’t have to put anything on your hair to secure your ends. If your hair is relaxed or you’re using this as a transitioning style, then you can put some perm rods the size of the curls you want on the ends to blend the straight ends.
- Continue twisting and sectioning until you have done your entire head.
- Put on a satin scarf to help your hairline lay down and then dry your hair completely either by air-drying or by sitting under a hooded dryer.
Things to Keep in Mind
- It is best not to sleep or nap while waiting for your two strand twists to dry because they will become flat. Your hair will look great on one side and not so much on the other side.
- Remember the more parts you make, the smaller the twists will be and the longer it will take you. Bigger twists will take less time but may not last as long. Try testing a few. Make one black hair twist and see if you like it. If you don't, adjust accordingly bigger or smaller.
Maintaining Black Hair Twists
- To maintain your twists, make sure to sleep with a satin scarf every night.
- Depending on how big and puffy you like your twists, you can revive them by spritzing them with water in the morning. Use a tiny bit of jojoba oil in a spray bottle and it will also add shine and keep your twists and scalp from drying out.
- If you prefer your two strand twists to stay smooth and non-puffy, just apply a little more Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey to your twists in the morning using your hands. Be gentle so that you don’t have to retwist your hair.
- This style can last a week depending on how well you maintain it on a day-to-day basis.
- For a variation of this style, you can do a twist-out. Simple unravel all of the two strand twists and you’ll be left with a beautiful curly style. Maintain this style the same way that you’d maintain the twists.
