What to put in my spray bottle?

by T.Payne
(Tennessee)

Hello Nina! I'm having an issue with nighttime hair care.

First, I have 3b/3c, fine, shoulder length curls that get dry and frizzy easily. As far as my regimen goes, I like to alternate washing and co-washing every other day (since I like to work out daily and my head sweats). After I wash and detangle, I use a little coconut oil on the hair and put my hair in a bun for the day. It stays pretty moisturized and healthy!

At night, I find that when I take my bun down, my hair feels a little dry and bushy, so I'm looking for a way to moisturize my hair at night (using very little products). I hear of lots of ladies who take a spray bottle and some water (and oils, conditioner, etc.), mist their hair, and reset it for the night. I hear about glycerin and certain essential oils but I'm not sure what would make the best nighttime moisture mixture.

So Nina, what do you think I should put in my spray bottle? How do you moisturize your hair at night? Thanks!

Nina's Response

Hi T,

I can certainly see where you're coming from with the dryness in your hair bun. I have experienced the same thing.

In a spray bottle, I'd recommend the following ingredients:

  • Distilled water

  • A little natural oil (coconut is fine)

  • Essential oil (like lavendar that smells nice)

  • A little bit of light conditioner (like Suave Coconut or Salerm 21)

If you find the spray not to be enough, then you can also add some additional coconut oil to hold in the moisture. You might also want to try some hair butters and see if those help.

When wearing my hair curly, I do the above.

Good luck!
